Too often, choosing one means compromising on another.
For decades, wetsuit insulation has relied on thicker neoprene and additional linings.
We wanted to explore a different approach.
Micro-chamber thermal insulation
APTUS 1.0 incorporates micro-chamber thermal insulation in its torso panels.
The engineered chamber structure is designed to retain small insulating air pockets and stabilise a thin layer of body-warmed water close to the skin, supporting thermal insulation without relying on conventional bulky fleece linings.

Over 35 years of surfing experience, distilled into APTUS 1.0.
Developed with big-wave surfer Andrew “Cotty” Cotton, with prototype testing beginning at Croyde Bay, Devon, before continuing at Nazaré, Portugal.
His experience and feedback have helped shape the product’s development.

Construction
The full technical detail of every Aptus 1.0. Open any line.
APTUS 1.0 incorporates an advanced micro-chamber thermal construction, introduced exclusively by Born Slippy. Integrated into the torso panels, the engineered chamber structure is designed to support thermal insulation without relying on conventional bulky fleece linings. Combined with premium Yamamoto neoprene and a made-to-measure fit, the construction forms part of our approach to technical performance. Developed and refined through real-world testing with Andrew Cotton.
APTUS 1.0 uses premium Japanese Yamamoto #40 and #39 closed cell limestone neoprene, with different grades positioned across the suit according to the performance required from each area.
Yamamoto neoprene is manufactured using limestone-derived chloroprene rubber, providing the foundation for the flexibility, warmth and technical performance required from APTUS 1.0.
GBS, glued and blindstitched, with triple-taped seams for warmth, flexibility and durability.
APTUS 1.0 uses glued, blindstitched and internally reinforced seams to create a strong, low-profile construction designed around durability and water resistance.
High-stress seam areas receive additional internal reinforcement to improve seam durability without adding unnecessary construction across the entire suit.
Internal reinforcement patches are positioned at critical seam junctions and high-load areas to distribute stress and strengthen points exposed to repeated stretching.
Seamless upper torso pattern cut to match the full rotational arc of your paddling stroke. Designed to minimise rubber pull through the full range of motion, along with chest compression and shoulder fatigue on long paddle outs.
Flexible, abrasion-resistant knee panels reinforce one of the highest-wear areas of the suit while allowing the knee to move naturally.
Contoured grooves behind the knee allow the material to fold and articulate more naturally through deep flexion, reducing unnecessary resistance when moving on the board.
Internal grip seals at the wrists and ankles help secure the cuffs against the body, reducing movement and helping limit water entry.
The cuffs are finished with fused neoprene edges for a precise, low-profile construction. The finish also helps protect the exposed neoprene foam at the wrists and ankles.
An integrated drainage panel at the ankle allows trapped water to escape rather than collect in the lower leg.
Strategically positioned drain holes allow trapped water to escape from the suit, helping prevent pooling and ballooning while maintaining a clean, low-profile construction.
With Custom, your pattern is cut specifically to your body dimensions from 26 individual measurements, and every profile is checked by Born Slippy before production. Standard sizes use our size chart.
Capped at 1,000 total units worldwide, allocated as production capacity allows. When unit 1,000 ships, the Aptus 1.0 line ends. You own a rare piece of high performance equipment rather than a mass market commodity.
APTUS 1.0 combines made-to-measure patterning, Japanese Yamamoto neoprene, micro-chamber thermal insulation and reinforced seam construction into a single suit built around fit, movement, warmth and durability.

“I’ve surfed some of the biggest waves on the planet and worn some of the best equipment ever made. Born Slippy is the wetsuit I choose to wear now. The custom fit is incredible, the micro-chamber thermal insulation is next level, and the Yamamoto neoprene feels like cashmere against your skin. It’s performance without compromise.”

“I’ve spent my life pushing the limits of what’s possible on the water. At that level, every detail matters. Your equipment has to work as hard as you do. That’s what I like about Born Slippy. A fresh approach to performance, where precision, innovation and attention to detail come together to create something exceptional.”
