Most of what gets written about wetsuits is written to sell them. What follows is closer to a working note: what we tried, what we measured, and the places where the answer was less flattering than we would have liked.

We cut to eighteen points because seventeen was not enough and nineteen changed nothing we could detect. That is the whole justification. There is no deeper principle at work.

A suit that lasts is a suit that gets repaired. We would rather send you a patch and an hour of instruction than a replacement, and the ownership terms are written to make that the path of least resistance.

In practice

The honest answer is that we do not know yet. We have three winters of data and a sample size in the low hundreds, which is enough to be confident about failure modes and not enough to be confident about anything else.

The material behaves differently at the third hour than it does at the first. Any claim that ignores that is describing a laboratory rather than an ocean, and we have been on the wrong side of that distinction before.

Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better.

Sir Frederick Henry Royce

There is a version of this decision that would have been cheaper, faster and entirely defensible. We did not take it, and the reasoning is worth setting down properly rather than leaving it to a product page.
